News Building towards a Net Zero future
30 September 2026
Climate change impacts us all and Germinal as a forage seed specialist in the agricultural industry understands the value of our environment.
We are pleased to announce Germinal’s operations in Ireland and the UK have now been independently certified as Carbon Neutral businesses, covering our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. All emissions have been quantified and reported in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
We are making decisions that will support a sustainable, low-carbon future and have partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain, funding certified carbon offsetting projects that range from clean water and green energy to education and employment. Every project is certified under recognised standards, including Verra – Verified Carbon Standard and United Nations Certified Emission Reductions.
A responsible journey to Net Zero
Achieving carbon neutral is a significant next step on our on-going journey to Net zero. With a 2024 carbon baseline set, we are acting to integrate sustainability considerations to all our business decisions to achieve our goal of Net Zero by 2040 at the latest.
At both sites, we have implemented solar panels, with green electricity charging forklifts and excess energy going back into the grid.
Transport sustainability initiatives include a vehicle fleet upgrade to electric, supported by an internal drive encouraging all staff to use trains when travelling to major cities for business events and meetings rather than domestic flights.
We are proactively working to improve our environmental performance and communicate our environmental commitment to our staff, customers and partners.
Sustainable success
“Achieving Carbon Neutral status adds to our legacy of sustainable success in the agrifood industry,” says Paul Billings, Germinal GB and Ireland Managing Director.
“Working with our plant breeding partner and fellow Openfolde company, Germinal Horizon, we provide Climate Smart grass and forage products used by livestock farmers across the world.
“Our award-winning Aber High Sugar Grasses (Aber HSG) are bred to help ruminant livestock capture more protein compared to conventional grasses while reducing ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions.
“Aber HSG varieties are the backbone of our Climate Smart seed ranges, specifically developed to tackle environmental challenges, including emissions reduction, soil support, nutrient efficiency, and crop resilience.
“We have more work to do on the road to Net Zero and will keep reducing emissions because it’s the right thing to do for our business, our partners, and our planet.”
