Webinars Webinar: Homegrown success at Seafields
We met with 2025 British Grassland Society winner James Henderson to examine the 10-year transformation of his family’s beef and sheep business.
Learn how producing homegrown forage is helping James and his family cut back on concentrates, increase profit, and lower the farm’s environmental impact. There is also a Q&A at the end of the recording, with any outstanding questions answered below.
How do you establish your grass swards?
After a break crop of winter barley, we plough the stubble and create a firm, fine seedbed. Aiming to drill the seed before the end of August, we need it to be well established before the ground temperature drops.
How do you find ensiling the chicory in your multi-species swards?
As yet, we have not ensiled multi-species but will treat them in the same way as red clover, aiming for a 48-hour wilt, taking into account the low dry matter of chicory.
