      Leafy Turnip

      Leafy turnip is a member of the brassica family with high early vigour. Its deep rooting will help condition the soil and relocate nutrients from the sub-soil to the top.

      Leafy turnip will also help reduce nitrogen leaching.

      Information for ACRES participants

      • For ACRES, a mixture of at least two crops from the prescribed list must be sown by 15 September.
      • Catch crops must remain in place until after 1 January.

      Ask an expert if you would like any advice about using catch crops in the ACRES scheme.

        Sowing rate: 4-6 kg/ha

        Sowing time: Sow from mid-July up until 15 September if sowing for ACRES

        Frost tolerance: Good

        Biomass: Yields of 3-5 t DM, suitable as a forage crop

        Pests & diseases: Generally not a problem, but clubroot could become an issue if brassicas are used as a cover crop over a period of years
